In his own words

Player interview · translated by Asian Breeze

On the level of competition

“The high school level here feels close to high school baseball in Japan — there are plenty of guys sitting 88 to 90. College is a different thing. It's mostly juniors and seniors, the velocity is up, the breaking balls are sharper, and one through nine they can all drive the ball out the other way. Right now, competing at that level takes everything I have.”

Receiving and game management

“Every pitch is called from the dugout and comes through a device on my wrist — 'fastball, away.' The pitcher gets to work at his own tempo. We don't have that system in Japan yet, so all of it was new to me, and I've found it genuinely interesting.”

Approach at the plate

“I've always handled fastballs well, so I sit on them — and I've gotten a lot better at adjusting to offspeed from there. Once I stopped worrying about results and just enjoyed playing, the results started coming.”

Position flexibility

“My coach told me that being able to play other positions would become a weapon for me, so he's given me reps at shortstop, second and third. He's using me with what comes next in mind, and I'm grateful for that.”

Adapting to the clubhouse

“The team feels like a family — a month in, we're already one group. I'm playing alongside guys from Mexico, Australia, the U.S. and Puerto Rico. My teammates teach me English and ask me to teach them Japanese, so we communicate just fine.”

Makeup

“There was a time I had to give up baseball because of illness. I don't know how far I can go from here — which is exactly why I want to take it as far as I possibly can as a player.”

  • Hitting leadoff and leading the team in average on the high school side, on base over .500.
  • Average against college pitching still around .200 — the player names this as the gap he needs to close.
